Culinary delights in Bornholm
I grew up on a small island in the Baltic Sea called Bornholm, and I just spent a great, sunny and delicious weekend there with my family. Saturday was pretty much the perfect day; we drove around the island, and our first stop was a cooking competition in Gudhjem, where I got a free taste of a salmon ice cream, with some fresh dill on top, and a rye cracker on the side.
I know it looks pretty droopy, but it actually tasted pretty good; it was kind of like creamy (frozen) salmon. Svaneke Ismejeri was the provider of ths funny combination, and they also had a blue cheese variety, that I didn’t try.
Later in the day we had the dilemma of choosing between my two favorite ice cream places in Denmark. I have an almost even love for Boisen Is in Snogebæk, and Svaneke Ismejeri, even though they are pretty different. Svaneke won out this time with their old fashioned feel and delicious strawberry ice cream. I still think my favorite ice cream is Boisens cinnamon though, which totally makes my stomach tickle with excitement every time. Please go and try it if you find yourself in Bornholm sometime!
Look at these cute sheep. Don’t they look happy? In Bornholm you can get the most amazing free range lamb, and saturday night we barbequed a leg of one. The lambs have a great life, running pretty much wild around hammeren and Hammershus on the northern tip of the island. They have ample space, and they get to spend their life doing what they like best; hanging out with their mothers and eating fresh green grass. The meat is wildly expensive, but totally worth it both for the taste and the great project of having these animals run free in the beautiful surroundings. We barbequed the leg of lamb rubbed in rosemay and salt, with tons of garlic poked into it, and it was the perfect summer dinner.
I served the lamb with a tomato and feta salad, tzatziki, boiled new potatoes, mint jelly (which people think I am nuts for eating), roasted lemon potatoes and carrots and green asparagus fried in butter. It was all extremely delicious, and had the taste of summer. All in all a great weekend with tons of sun, my first (freezing) swim of the year and great walks around the island. I hope your weekend was equally amazing!
